The temple atop after a climb, is dedicated to Parvati, Vishnu, Ganesh, Kartikeya and Devadeshwar.
Here are over a hundered steps to reach to the temple atop.Devotees make their way as early as 5:00am in the morning. It is believed that Pehwa ruler Balaji Baji Rao watched Britishers defeat from that point, in the battle of Kirkee.
The temple is good vantage point for enjoying city views. Apart from the temples, there is Peshwa Museum which is housing the portraits of the Peshwas, old manuscripts, weapons and coins. According to records, the main idol was carved out of gold by craftsmen from Karnataka. Later on it was stolen on 1932, it was replaced by silver idols plated with gold. This is one of the most famous landmarks of Pune.
Located at a height of about 2100 feet above the sea level, the Parvati temple is situated on the highest peak in Pune. This temple is regarded to be one of the oldest heritage structures in the city. Built during the Peshwa dynasty this place offers the best aerial view of Pune city and draws a large number of tourists every day. The hill top houses one big temple and three small ones which can be accessed after climbing 103 odd steps. For many Punekars visiting the Parvati temple is like a daily routine. The temple gates open at 5 in the morning and close after 8 in the evening.
The temple where it stands today was built by the 3rd Peshwa, Shrimant Naba Saheb in the year 1749 A.D. Historians believe that when his mother Kashibai fell severely ill. |
